1) metaphor: used to compare things that are not usually seen as similar; implies a comparison
2) simile: used to compare things that are not usually seen as similar; states a comparison directly
3) personification: special kind of metaphor that gives human-like qualities to something that is not human (such as an animal, an object, an idea)
4) voice: what makes reading interesting; the expression of personality in writing
5) diction: an author’s choice of words
6) detail: all things a writer uses to develop a subject (facts, observations, reasons, examples, incidents, etc.)
